CO-Lab: Mad Libs Rebus Story Drawings with John O’Connor

1315 MASS MoCA Way, Bldg 13, 1st FL, North Adams, MA 01247

In this fun, experimental workshop, participants received a text-based silkscreen print from Gary, based on one of John’s narrative drawings. These prints were intentionally incomplete, with specific words and images omitted to invite interpretation. Participants incorporated their own words - or images, shapes, forms, etc. - into their print, creating their own story-drawing. John introduced his drawing practice and the concepts behind this series of works, while Gary discussed his print process. At the workshop's conclusion, we presented our drawn stories and everybody received GARY BUCKS which can be traded for tote bags.

This workshop drew inspiration from the phrasal template format, a core element of popular collaborative games like Mad Libs and Cards Against Humanity. It’s also a foundational concept in natural language processing within computer science (AI) and linguistics.
